THE TALE

Spring, 2018

IT ALL STARTED WHEN ...

"THE STORY YOU ARE ABOUT TO SEE IS REAL," A 13-YEAR-OLD JENNY FOX SAYS.

THE TALE is an HBO film that focuses on a documentary filmmaker who revisits a short story she wrote at 13. This story causes her to face life altering questions about her first sexual experience and the elusive nature of memory. It is director Jennifer Fox's personal memoir that examines the journey from denial to truth and the stories we tell ourselves to survive.

It stars two-time Academy Award® nominee and Emmy Award® winner Laura Dern, Academy Award® winner Ellen Burstyn, Academy Award® winner Common, Jason Ritter, Elizabeth Debicki, Frances Conroy, John Heard, and Isabel Nélisse. It is written and directed by Sundance Grand Prize Winner and Emmy nominated director Jennifer Fox.

Project Consent is partnering with HBO and THE TALE to encourage conversations about the different themes explored in the film, such as sexual abuse, manipulation, and mental health. RAINN states that the film's authenticity sends a powerful message about child abuse’s lifelong impact.” It is through Jennifer Fox’s brave memoir where we see a story about a survivor, her repressed memories of abuse, and how she recalls these memories through the short story she wrote at 13.

Sara Li, Project Consent's founder, says the film is "raw and haunting and nearly impossible to digest immediately," but deserves to be seen to help further conversations around sexual abuse. Li, a survivor of sexual assault, states,

"Laura Dern’s phenomenal acting chops brought the story to screen, but Jennifer’s resilience brought it to life. She took back her narrative in a way that many will never be able to understand. And with The Tale, that’s fine. You don’t have to understand what she’s been through. It’s enough to just know. We all know a Jenny Fox, after all."

THE TALE helps us better understand how child sexual abuse and trauma can impact the life of a survivor, while also depicting how survivors of abuse can take control of the narrative in their own way.
