#PROJECTSAAM2018: WEEKLY ROUND UP
April 1st marked the start of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). As part of our #ProjectSAAM2018 campaign, we will be publishing a weekly round up of news relating to SAAM every Friday in April.
The National Sexual Violence Resource Center began #30DaysofSAAM on Instagram, a daily contest to help spread the word on sexual assault and combat misconceptions and get the conversation moving. Each day there is a prompt and you answer the prompt by posting a photo on your Instagram.
With Bill Cosby’s criminal trial coming up, jury selection began at the beginning of April. Potential jurors were asked if they knew anything about the #MeToo movement at the beginning of this year, and all but one juror responded they had heard about it. It was also revealed that the judge was to allow five women to testify against Cosby instead of just one, as in the previous trial.
When it comes to sexual assault and harassment in the workplace, the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal has become another option for survivors to take their cases. This is a faster route to justice, and one that brings focus to sexual assault as a violation of survivors’ basic human rights.
The first week of SAAM may be coming to a close, but there are still many opportunities to get involved throughout the month. Keep an eye out on the National Sexual Violence Resource Center website, stay up to date on the news, and use your voice to combat myths behind sexual assault.
